Two orphaned singing twins, backed by very different uncles, find their bond strained when they fall for the same girl.
The story
Orphaned twins Beppo and Tonio each have a different uncle as guardian, and at sixteen they are discovered to have beautiful singing voices. Forceful Uncle Paul tries to launch Tonio as a variety-theater singer, while gentle Uncle Max is less assertive and Beppo becomes a sideshow clown. The brothers’ rivalry deepens when they fall in love with the same girl, and they part ways. Later, while Tonio rehearses a new show, Paul clashes with the theater director and declares that Tonio will not perform, hoping to pressure him.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
Beppo and Tonio Forti are twin brothers who grew up as orphans. Each has a different uncle as his guardian: Beppo has Uncle Max, and Tonio has Uncle Paul. When they are 16, it is discovered that both boys have beautiful singing voices. Uncle Paul, the more forceful of the two uncles, then tries to promote his ward and launch a career for him as a singer in variety theater. Uncle Max, the gentleness personified, is nowhere near as assertive, so his Beppo ends up merely as a clown in the sideshow that the two uncles run rather incompetently. To make matters worse, the twins both fall in love with the same girl. A quarrel inevitably follows, and they part ways. Just as Tonio is rehearsing a new show, his mentor Paul falls out with the theater director. To put pressure on him, and because he knows the director will not be able to find a replacement for Tonio quickly, Paul declares that Tonio has no intention of performing. But Uncle Paul, who has a big mouth, has badly miscalculated. Despite the two of them leaving the theater, the director is counting on Tonio’s return the next day and is therefore not particularly worried. Meanwhile, Max and his ward Beppo read in the newspaper about Tonio’s upcoming premiere. They go to the theater and meet the unsuspecting director. He is in a panic: the house is sold out, and Tonio has not shown up. Yet! Spotting Beppo, the director, believing him to be Tonio, immediately drags him onto the stage. Beppo’s singing saves the performance. Meanwhile, Uncle Paul is rubbing his hands together, assuming that the performance has been canceled. He has expressly forbidden his ward Tonio from going to the theater. When Uncle Paul switches on his radio, he is astonished to hear that the performance is being broadcast live. Paul is furious that Beppo has ruined his clever plan by stepping in. So Paul grabs Tonio and hurries to the theater before the performance is over. At last, the twin brothers are reconciled onstage, and they sing together for the audience.
