The story

Thesi Petersen, a young fashion designer from Zurich, lives alone in a small attic apartment in Hamburg after divorcing Robert. Scatterbrained but cheerful, she learns from her dentist that Robert is going to marry again, and is hurt by the news. Looking back, she recognizes how their marriage was worn down by constant trivial arguments and his frequent absences. At a café, writer Niki Springer and German consul Georg Lindberg notice her, and Betsy introduces them. Both men fall for Thesi, who draws them into her efforts to get under Robert’s skin as his new wedding approaches.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

Thesi Petersen, from Zurich, is a young fashion designer who lives alone in a small attic apartment in Hamburg, having divorced her husband, Robert. She is scatterbrained, but pretty and always cheerful. Men flock around her as soon as they learn she is divorced. During a dental appointment, her dentist, Dr. Agartz, is distracted and fails to recognize her. At the practice, he tells her that Robert is going to marry again and that his ex-wife was the only one to blame for their separation anyway. Thesi is upset. Memories of her marriage to Robert lead her to realize that the two of them always argued over trivial things: her absent-mindedness, for example, or the fact that he was never home and she would rearrange the apartment yet again in the meantime. Eventually, Thesi had had enough and spontaneously packed her things. She goes out alone. At a café, the writer Niki Springer and Georg Lindberg, the German consul in Mexico, notice her. Betsy, who is in love with both men without success, brings Thesi over to their table; she had met Thesi while processing her German visa. Niki and Georg fall in love with Thesi, who gets them both involved to annoy Robert. She turns up uninvited at his engagement party in a daringly low-cut dress, introduces both men as her lovers, lights a cigarette, and leaves again shortly afterward. The guests and Robert’s fiancée, Karin, are left shocked. Thesi and Georg become a couple. Although Thesi has repeatedly spoken out against getting married again, she becomes sentimental as Robert’s wedding date with Karin draws nearer and Georg, too, has to return to Mexico. She accepts Georg’s fourth proposal, and the two plan to travel to Mexico together by steamer a few days later. At Thesi’s farewell party, the day before their departure, Robert unexpectedly shows up. He has increasingly been arguing with his fiancée, among other things because of his close relationship with Thesi. They both realize that their time together as a married couple also had its happy moments. Thesi already feels ill during the party. The next day, she is admitted to hospital with scarlet fever. Georg extends his stay in Germany so he can visit her regularly in hospital, but it is Robert in particular who visits her every day. Before long, the hospital room is filled with flowers from both men. Thesi’s recovery is slow. She uses the time to think about her feelings. In the end, she is certain that she loves Robert more than Georg. Georg sets off for Mexico alone, but thanks Thesi for the best summer months he has ever had. Meanwhile, Robert has broken up with Karin, who realized that he would never get over his ex-wife. When Thesi enters her attic apartment, all the furniture is gone. Before she can call the police, Robert appears before her. While she was in hospital, he moved her furniture back to his apartment, where most of it had been before the divorce. He takes Thesi to his place and carries her over the threshold as he did on their wedding day. While he is briefly at work, Thesi spontaneously rearranges the apartment. This time Robert takes it with good humor and proposes to her. She accepts.
