The story

Full plot (contains spoilers)

After many years, Dr. Knut Hansen marries his old childhood sweetheart, Stina Thorwald. Thomas Krugmann intends to come to the wedding in church with his two children, but a car breakdown prevents him from making it. He does arrive in time for the celebrations, however, and plans to move with his little family to live with Anne Petersen, whom he met and fell in love with during his summer vacation. Anne is a fisherwoman and has an amusing pet: William, a tame seal, whom the children immediately adore. At first, everything seems idyllic, but Thomas unexpectedly has to return to Hanover to fill in for a sick colleague. Anne is left alone with the children and has to fight to stop the other fishermen from taking her supply contracts away from her. One day, she meets Sabine, who goes out to sea with her so they can talk without interruption. Sabine confides that she is pregnant and does not dare tell Piet. She also cannot imagine giving up her job. Anne, too, begins to doubt whether she is up to the task of being a mother to Thomas’s children. Those doubts grow stronger when Anne’s ex-boyfriend Robert suddenly shows up, hoping to win her back, even though he nearly broke her heart eight years earlier. To make matters worse, her old fishing boat breaks down, leaving her unable to go out to sea to fish and threatening to put her behind on deliveries and into financial trouble. Robert pays for the boat’s repairs without asking, and she almost forgives him. Thomas unexpectedly returns and finds Anne alone in the house with Robert. He draws his own conclusions and immediately moves into the “Krabbe” guesthouse. There he meets Knut Hansen, who is also having relationship problems. They talk things through, and Knut assures him that Robert is harmless. After all, he has known Robert since he was a child. To ease Anne’s burden, the two men plan for Knut to work part-time for her. The next day, Anne and Thomas are ready to reconcile and find their way back to each other. They confess their love, and Thomas gets down on one knee and proposes to Anne on the beach. At the wedding ceremony soon afterward, William the seal brings them the rings, and the young couple sets out to sea together aboard Anne’s festively decorated fishing boat.
