A reluctant Leipzig clinic director is stranded in Thailand when a computer virus derails his medical-congress trip.
The story
Leipzig clinic director Roland Heilmann has no desire to attend a medical congress in Thailand, but Sarah Marquardt presses him to go, citing the benefits to the clinic and questioning whether he trusts his colleagues to manage without him. A computer virus disrupts air travel, diverting their flight to Krabi; when the virus shuts down flights across Thailand and the congress is canceled, Roland, Sarah, and assistant Kris Haas are stranded. Sarah and Kris take the unexpected trip in stride, while Roland searches for a way home. Back in Leipzig, Roland’s son Jakob meets Eva Bühlig, a Sachsenklinik trainee, and they arrange to meet again.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
Sarah Marquardt stands on the beach in front of the hotel in Krabi, gazing into the distance, and knows that she has to do something now. On her way to the police station, she calls Dr. Kathrin Globisch in Leipzig to find out how Jakob is doing. Dr. Globisch would be glad if his father, Dr. Roland Heilmann, could take care of him, but that is impossible for now because he is in prison and cannot help. Four days earlier, in Leipzig, outside the Sachsenklinik, Jakob is making his father a coffee when he first sees Eva Bühlig through the cafeteria window. The clinic is extremely busy because of a gas explosion that has left many people injured. In the middle of the commotion, Sarah Marquardt calls Dr. Heilmann because he has not yet agreed to attend the medical congress in Thailand. He makes it clear that he has no time and does not want to fly to Bangkok. Meanwhile, Sarah tells Kris Haas that he will accompany her to Thailand as her assistant because she knows he has been there before. A short while later, she turns up in the emergency department and keeps pestering Roland about confirming his attendance. She also points out the financial benefits for the clinic, accuses him of not trusting his colleagues, and asks him bluntly, loudly enough for everyone to hear, whether he thinks they can handle the situation. He can only answer yes. Because a computer virus has shut down all air traffic over Bangkok, their flight is diverted to Krabi. Sarah and Kris are pleased, but Roland does not see the situation the same way. Sarah goes looking for a hotel and, once she finds one, has to give Roland the bad news: the virus has now shut down all air traffic over Thailand, the congress has been canceled, and they are stuck there. Jakob is shopping in town when he happens to run into Eva. They get talking, and it turns out Eva is doing her practical year at the Sachsenklinik, so she knows that Dr. Heilmann is Jakob’s father and is currently in Thailand. They arrange to meet the next day. While Sarah and Kris enjoy their unplanned vacation, Roland just wants to leave. By chance, he overhears a conversation between doctors and learns that it is possible to travel on cargo planes. He sets off for the airport, but has to stop along the way to help with a medical emergency. At the local hospital, he happens to meet Helen Larsson, who immediately appeals to him. But the detour has cost too much time, and the plane has gone. The taxi driver suggests that he take a bus to Malaysia the next day, from where he can fly home. Roland returns to the hotel to share the good news with Sarah. Jakob spends a lovely day in town with Eva, and they kiss for the first time. In the evening, they go to the cafeteria for a drink, where Jakob collapses after clutching his chest. The next morning, Sarah, Roland, and Kris set off by bus. Roland sees Helen again; she is traveling on the same bus. Along the way, she tells him that she is also a doctor and runs a small medical station in a jungle village. She also explains that the bus is not going to Malaysia but to a temple complex—a plan Sarah made, as Roland then has to learn from her. On the way, the bus driver hits a moped rider. While Roland, Kris, and Helen administer first aid, the bus drives off without them. Despite his injury, the moped rider also sets off, and Helen does not have far to go on foot to reach her village. Roland and Kris are left behind, hoping the bus will soon return. Kris finds Roland’s broken mobile phone, which has fallen out of his trouser pocket. Meanwhile, at the Sachsenklinik, the doctors fight to save Jakob’s life after he suffers cardiac arrest. He is probably suffering from viral myocarditis because he has been walking around with a cold. Since fluid has accumulated, Dr. Martin Stein will probably have to perform a cardiac puncture. After the procedure, Dr. Stein, Dr. Maria Weber, and Dr. Globisch realize that Jakob needs a new heart and that he must be kept alive with an artificial heart until one is available. But they need Dr. Heilmann’s consent. Roland and Kris decide to walk to Helen’s village after all. In the meantime, Sarah has reached the temple complex, the bus trip’s destination. There, a monkey steals her handbag. She persuades the bus driver to go back, but finds no one there, and Roland does not answer his mobile phone. She returns to Krabi to report the theft. She is referred to Honorary Consul Dieter Noss. Roland and Kris arrive at the village, where they meet Tamika, who is pregnant and shows them the way to the medical station. Sarah finds the honorary consul and explains the situation to him. He immediately contacts Krabi Police Chief Adirak Bunriang. He is quite taken with Sarah and invites her on a picnic. Roland befriends Helen and asks her about Tamika’s pregnancy; Tamika is having cramping pains. Helen explains that many people in the village have no access to Western medicine. When Otto Stein arrives at the clinic with Lisa and Jonas, they witness Jakob suffering cardiac arrest. Dr. Globisch and Dr. Stein resuscitate him, but are now certain that he needs a new heart. Roland has managed to arrange a van to take them from the village back to Krabi, but before they leave, he wants to see Tamika again. He suspects she has undiagnosed appendicitis, which would be life-threatening for her and the baby. But Tamika’s husband sends Roland and Kris away. Shortly afterward, she collapses unconscious. Kris is still nearby and helps her husband take her to the clinic. Roland is certain that her appendix has ruptured and urges Helen to operate immediately. But she does not have the equipment for it. Honorary Consul Noss complains to Sarah, asking why she rejected the police chief. She had not realized that he expected something in return for his help. Sarah goes to the police station but first has to bribe an officer just to be allowed in. She invites Adirak to meet her at the hotel that afternoon, and he is immediately willing to do whatever it takes to find Roland and Kris. At the clinic, Helen and Roland have to improvise, but they save Tamika and the baby with an emergency operation. Roland asks Kris to stay in the village for a few more days to keep an eye on the mother and baby and help Helen. Helen suggests that Roland could stay too, and that the two of them could build a small, functioning hospital together. But he decides against it and lets Helen drive him to the hotel. As a parting gift, Helen gives him a small statue that is supposed to bring him good luck. After that, he barges into Sarah’s meeting with Adirak, who has just been rejected by her again. Roland learns from Sarah about his son’s problems. During a scuffle, the police chief falls into the pool, and as a result he arrests Roland and locks him up. Honorary Consul Noss now has to pull out all the stops to get Adirak onside. He even has to sacrifice a bottle of his sloe brandy before Roland is released. As soon as he is out, Roland calls Martin Stein, who tells him that Jakob needs an artificial heart. Roland is certain, however, that Jakob can manage without one because he has a strong immune system. Kathrin picks Roland up at the airport and takes him to the clinic, where he meets the worried Eva at Jakob’s bedside. He immediately clashes with Martin and Dr. Weber, who insist on implanting an artificial heart, but he prevails because, as clinic director and Jakob’s father, he has the final say. Roland gives Jakob the statue he received from Helen and keeps vigil at his bedside from then on, until Martin brings him the good news that the inflammation levels have fallen. Three weeks later, Jakob is completely healthy again and goes on vacation with Eva. Afterward, Roland and Sarah pick Kris up at the airport. There, Sarah learns from Kris that Roland sent Helen an allegedly defective ultrasound machine in Thailand. Kris also passes on everyone’s greetings, along with Helen’s message that the offer still stands. Sarah is now completely at a loss.
