Full plot (contains spoilers)
At the heart of the story are the wartime experiences of three very different men, brought together by conscription and led by Gustav Knospe, a Berlin original. Alongside Gustav are the private scholar Ernst Körner and the amusing Jewish man Siegfried. They are all reservists and have very different experiences both at the front and behind the lines, with romance playing its part as well. In the end, the cheerful events outweigh the dramatic and tragic ones.
