The story
Two very different men—both widowers of the same woman—must decide how to honor her final wish.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
Prosecutor Heinrich Gruber and travel journalist Tom Gruber meet at the reading of a will. There, they learn that they were both married to Sophia, who died in a car accident. The two very different men argue over how she should be buried. Sophia’s written last wish was to be buried at sea off the (fictional) small island of Neuhever by both her husbands, but Heinrich Gruber refuses, since in his eyes this would be against the law. He breaks into the funeral home and steals Sophia’s ashes, but Tom catches him in the act. Together they set off for Neuhever. On the way, they pick up Ella, a Finnish hitchhiker who is also heading to Neuhever to visit her lover Ole, who had recently cast her out and whose child she is expecting. After a series of complications, the two are happily reunited. From Sophia’s farewell letters to her two husbands, it becomes clear that they need to share what they know about their wife in order to form a complete picture of her. But that is impossible while the men are still arguing about the burial. When Heinrich finally gets his way and insists on a cemetery burial, a fight breaks out, sending the ashes swirling into the air. At last, the two men find common ground. Sophia was from the island and had to leave it at the age of 17 to start a new life. Her two husbands fulfilled different needs for her and, together, gave her a wonderful life after a very difficult start. She was never able to return to the island while alive, but in death she very much wanted to. At the end, Tom produces a small glass vial of Sophia’s ashes, which he had set aside for himself, and the two now-reconciled men carry out Sophia’s last wish together, scattering her ashes at sea off Neuhever—with an inflatable swan, since they could not find a boat.
