Determined to quit together, the pregnant couple plans to travel to remote New Zealand and go cold turkey. With neither Eva’s father nor her former boyfriend willing to help financially, they decide to rob a secondhand bookshop to raise the money. The plan collapses: Jo is arrested, while Eva escapes by jumping into the Regnitz. Desperate to free Jo, she takes Paul Krämer hostage and seeks refuge with him.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

Eva, the daughter of a conductor, falls madly in love with Jo Krämer, a musician addicted to heroin. Her love is so strong that she, too, becomes dependent on the drug. But the two of them want to kick the vile stuff. Neither Eva’s father nor her ex-boyfriend Tom Schäfer, who still loves her, is willing to support them financially. But the junkie couple is determined: they want to go to the remoteness of New Zealand and go cold turkey, especially since Eva is pregnant. They urgently need money for this. Their plan: rob a secondhand bookshop. Everything goes wrong: Jo is arrested, while Eva escapes by jumping into the Regnitz. In her desperation, she takes Paul Krämer, a classical scholar who is currently having relationship troubles, hostage and takes refuge with him. She is determined to get Jo out of prison at all costs. The couple has discovered that, through their unshakable love, they can communicate telepathically through music. Once Jo is transferred to a psychiatric hospital after a suicide attempt, Eva thinks it will be easy to get him out of there. After a roundabout series of events, and with Paul Krämer’s help, the plan succeeds. They manage to escape. But before heading to New Zealand, the two hide out in an old house belonging to Eva’s ex-boyfriend Tom. He has driven them there in his old VW bus. However, he realizes that he still loves Eva and calls the police, who arrive at the secluded property and order Eva and Jo to come out. At the end, all we see is Jo, who had just been fetching firewood in the shed, running toward the police with his hands raised. Eva rushes out of the house with a pistol to help her boyfriend. The ending is left open.
