He meets Hanna, a local newspaper worker who has recently ended her relationship with Tom after they could not have the child they wanted. As Hanna and Mikael talk, her father, Pastor Carl, questions whether Mikael is qualified for the restoration. Hanna’s mother, Bille, has a bad feeling because a necklace she saw on Luna reminds her of something. Meanwhile, rumors that Hanna’s godfather Lasse plans to sell the newspaper add uncertainty to the town.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
Mikael and his daughter Luna are on their way to Frederholm because he has been hired to restore the church organ. On the way, he meets Hanna, who works for the local newspaper, run by her godfather, Lasse. Hanna has just broken up with her boyfriend, Tom, because the two of them were unable to have the child they wanted. Carl, a pastor and Hanna’s father, is concerned that Mikael may not have the qualifications needed to restore the church organ. Mikael manages to put his concerns to rest, though. Since Hanna has moved into the house that was originally promised to Mikael and his daughter, they have to spend the night in their bus. The next morning, Mikael discusses the work with Carl when Hanna stops by. They get talking, and Mikael mentions that he grew up nearby. Hanna’s mother, Bille, has a bad feeling because the day before she saw a necklace on Luna that reminded her of something. On his way to the supermarket to get some salt, Mikael stops by Hanna’s, and she lends him some. She wants to know what happened to Luna’s mother, and he tells her the story of her disappearance. That evening, Hanna visits Mikael, who repays her for the salt with a glass of wine. Bille is skeptical about whether Mikael is the right person to restore the organ and tries to convince Carl to find someone else. Meanwhile, a rumor spreads around the newspaper office that Lasse wants to sell the paper. Hanna confronts him about it, but he evades the question. When Hanna brings Mikael more salt, he invites her to dinner. They run into Tom there. Mikael realizes that something is wrong. Afterwards, Hanna tries to explain to him that the problem is that she cannot have children. Maja, the retired teacher, also asks Lasse whether he intends to sell. It emerges that he is going through a crisis of meaning and wants to change something in his life. Later, when he runs into Luna, he asks if she can look after his dog, Robin, until the weekend because he has to go away. The next morning, Hanna and Mikael happen to meet by the lake. They realize they have a lot in common and really like each other. Mikael kisses her, and she kisses him back. Carl wants to know from his daughter why she and Tom broke up. He wonders why they never considered adoption. Bille wants to bring Luna some school notebooks, but when she finds no one at the bus, she starts looking around more carefully. Afterwards, she goes to the church and tells Mikael he must stop work immediately because the renovation budget has been cut. In reality, she just wants him to leave. Mikael tells Luna that they will be moving on because his contract with Carl has fallen through. Luna, however, thinks they should stay because of Hanna. Meanwhile, Bille tells Carl that Mikael cannot continue the work because he has taken on too much. She also asks him not to discuss it with Mikael. Mikael wants to say goodbye to Hanna and tells her what has happened. After they go inside the house, they sleep together. When Luna appears looking for her father, she presents him and Hanna with her idea for how they could still restore the organ: crowdfunding. Bille confides in Maja, since she is the only person who knows the truth about Mikael: he is Bille’s biological son. Later, when Bille encounters Mikael in the church, she tells him the truth. He reproaches her for not telling him sooner, and because he has now slept with his half-sister. Mikael sees no other option but to leave immediately. When he tells Hanna, she doesn’t understand why, and he doesn’t tell her. When Luna returns the dog to Lasse, she sees in a photograph the same necklace she has. Lasse is astonished, because he had always believed the necklace was one of a kind. He gave it to Bille back then. Mikael cannot help but eventually tell Hanna the truth. Afterwards, she goes to her parents and reproaches her mother. Carl goes to Lasse to tell him that Mikael is Bille’s son, but that he is not Mikael’s father. Lasse asks Bille whether he is Mikael’s father, and she admits it. Before she leaves Carl, she also confirms to him that Lasse is the father. Two months later, Hanna learns from her doctor that she is pregnant, even though she had always thought she could not have children. Lasse seeks out Mikael and Luna where they are staying temporarily and tells them the story of the necklace. When Hanna tells her father she is pregnant, she learns from him that Mikael cannot be her brother because she was adopted, as Bille was unable to have any more children after giving birth to Mikael. Lasse asks Mikael and Luna to return to Frederholm. Mikael goes to Hanna to tell her they are back, but that he will try to stay out of her way. She explains that everything has changed considerably and that she is expecting his child. When the little boy is baptized a year later, Bille also returns to the family.
