The story
After 16 years away, fashion designer Marit Gustavsson returns from London to Solvorn, the Norwegian town where she grew up. She left at 17 after a falling-out with her parents and sister Kristin, and has not seen her daughter Ida since Kristin took the baby in and raised her. Marit says she is in the area on business and plans to stay only a few days, but Ida is eager to know her and Marit ends up staying with Kristin and her husband Petter. Kristin worries that Marit will unsettle Ida and take her away. As Ida grows closer to her returned mother, old conflicts and disagreements over the teenager’s independence strain the sisters’ already fragile reunion.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
After 16 years, fashion designer Marit Gustavsson returns from London to her Norwegian hometown of Solvorn. At the age of 17, she left her parents and sister Kristin after a falling-out. She was considered the black sheep of the family and caused unrest in the village with her wild love life and partying. Now Marit wants to get her life in order and make peace with her family. Her parents died in an accident years ago, and she wants at last to visit their grave. She wants to make peace with Kristin, too: under pressure from their parents, Kristin once took in Marit's daughter when she was still a baby and raised her. Marit took that as her cue to leave without a word. She has not seen her daughter Ida, now 16, since that day. Kristin is surprised when Marit suddenly turns up in front of her on Norway's National Day. Marit claims she had business in the area. She intends to stay in Norway for only a few days. Ida is thrilled to finally meet her aunt, and this eventually leads Marit to leave the hotel and stay with Kristin and her husband, Petter. Kristin fears that Marit might be a bad influence on teenage Ida. She also believes Marit wants to take her child away from her. In fact, Ida starts skipping school, pretending to have headaches and hoping Marit will cover for her, since she used to do the same thing herself. Kristin reacts sternly. She also forbids Ida from having a relationship with Ole, who is the same age as Ida. When Ida secretly arranges to meet Ole at a party, Marit does not tell Kristin. And because the two sisters are caught up in an argument, Ida is able to sneak out of the house that evening. The party is taking place at a spot on the opposite shore. Ida fails to reach her friends' boat in time, so they leave without her. She then tries to catch up with them in a motorboat that has been left behind. Out in the middle of the water, it becomes clear that her boat has a leak. It starts filling with water, and Ida grows increasingly panicked. Meanwhile, Kristin notices that Ida is not in her room. Marit tells her about the party. Determined to bring Ida home, Kristin sets off with Marit. The women reach the sinking motorboat just in time and manage to save Ida. Back at the house, Kristin insists that Marit move out immediately. Their loud argument also turns to Marit's motherhood and Kristin's self-sacrificing work as an adoptive mother. Ida hears them arguing and reacts angrily and in distress. She packs her things and runs away from the house. She plans to hitchhike to Oslo, but changes her mind halfway there. Marit is staying the night with her former boyfriend Mads, and Ida also goes to Mads's. She has a fever and stays with Mads and Marit for the next few days. She does not want to go home. Although Kristin and Petter are suffering because of the situation, they let Ida make her own decision. When Ida learns that Marit has to return to London, she asks if she can go with her. Marit agrees. She tells Kristin about Ida's decision, and Kristin lets her go. At the ferry, however, Marit asks Ida to call Kristin and Petter at least, since she does not know when she will see her parents again. That phone call is what finally changes Ida's mind. She returns to Kristin and Petter, and they welcome her with open arms. Shortly before leaving, Marit visits her parents' grave. Having made peace with her past, she leaves the place where she spent her childhood and youth once again.
