Full plot (contains spoilers)
Hanna Andersson runs a cheese shop in Stockholm, where she is visited by Per Nordenfeldt, who produces moose cheese and is looking for new buyers. She takes an immediate liking to him, and afterward her employee Elke even says that she was openly flirting with him. But Hanna doesn’t act on it, as she is in a hurry to pick up her husband at the station when he returns from a business trip. Their daughter Lina is on a bus trip with her graduating class. When Hanna arrives at the station, she discovers that her husband hasn’t been alone on his trip—he has started another affair. As she is about to confront him at home, she gets a call from her daughter: the bus has gone off the road and slid into a lake. Fortunately, everyone was rescued. Hanna immediately drives to Kungsholt to pick up Lina. When they get there, Hanna and Lina like it so much that they decide to extend their vacation by a few days. Someone suggests she ask Greta Hamsun at the local fish restaurant about finding a house. Lina also wants to find the rescuer who fished her diary out of the lake so she can thank him. Later, as they explore the area by bicycle, they pass a farm where there are moose. As Hanna had already suspected, the farm belongs to Per Nordenfeldt. He lives there with his cousin Henrike, who is not at all pleased by Hanna’s visit, since she wants Per to get together with Greta. They own the restaurant, which they have leased to Greta. The next day, when Hanna and Lina are back by the lake, they meet the stranger who helped during the bus accident. Hanna had already met him on the way to Kungsholt, when she took a wrong turn. He is somehow odd and claims he is only on vacation for a few days and otherwise has no time. Per invites Hanna to a cheese tasting. When he briefly goes into the house, Henrike comes over and introduces herself. Hanna assumes she is Per’s wife and leaves. While fleeing from him, she gets caught in a thunderstorm, and the mysterious man offers her shelter. Shortly afterward, she runs into Per again, and he clears up the misunderstanding about Henrike. He invites her to a romantic dinner. At the same time, the mysterious man is hanging around the farm; when someone comes by, he flees, leaving the gate to the moose enclosure improperly closed. Meanwhile, Hanna’s husband Sten has unexpectedly turned up in Kungsholt and wants to save their marriage. Greta happens to arrive and naturally sees this as her chance to get together with Per after all. She recommends that the couple take a kayak trip. Per learns that the moose have escaped from their enclosure and sets off to look for them. The stranger, whose name is Carl, also searches for them because he feels guilty. By chance, he comes across Hanna, who is planning a picnic on an island with her husband. Together, they find the moose and notify the police. When Hanna returns to Sten, she realizes that she no longer sees a future for their relationship. They embrace one last time, which Per happens to witness through binoculars. Back at the farm, Hanna stops by to see Carl. He is packing and plans to leave Kungsholt. She happens to see a picture of Carl and Per and asks him what it is about. He reveals that he is Per’s father and explains why he left many years ago. Hanna wants Per to meet his father, but when she goes to the farm to look for him, Henrike brushes her off. Greta happens to see this and tells Per. When Per goes to his father, he sees him embracing Hanna. Per runs away again because his father had an affair with his wife while he was away. Now he thinks the same thing is happening again. In the end, with Henrike’s help, the two men patch things up. In the meantime, Hanna and Lina have returned to Stockholm. Henrike feels guilty and calls Hanna. She explains the situation to Lina over the phone and asks her to tell Hanna that things are not as they seem. Lina persuades her mother to go back to Kungsholt. Carl also tries to talk his son round, but Per has reservations because Hanna is still married. He eventually decides to go to Stockholm to see Hanna. But he no longer has to, because Hanna has already arrived at the farm.
