The story

Pablo Sterni, an insurance agent living with his wife and son in a monotonous housing development near Paris, has been pocketing premiums after falsely telling a client that his vintage car was insured. When the car is stolen and found badly damaged, Pablo faces a large repair bill and the threat of prison. He learns that his cousin Léon, whom he has not seen in years, has inherited a million francs. Léon has been using LSD for decades and believes Janis Joplin and John Lennon promised to return. Pablo plans to pass off his wife Brigitte and unemployed actor Walter Kingkate as the musicians to get the money.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

Pablo Sterni (Sergi López) is an insurance agent who leads a dreary life with his wife, Brigitte (Marie Trintignant), and their son Jérémie in an upscale but terribly monotonous housing development in the Paris region. To make ends meet, he swindles one of his clients, Mr. Cannon (Jean-Louis Trintignant), by making him believe that his vintage Aston Martin DB4—which never gets driven—is insured, while Pablo pockets the premiums himself. But Mr. Cannon’s car is stolen and found half-destroyed. The garage estimates the repairs at 500,000 francs, leaving Pablo no choice but to find the money if he wants to stay out of prison. He learns that Léon (Christophe Lambert), his cousin, whom he hasn’t seen in years, has just inherited a million francs. But Léon has been stuck on LSD for 30 years and is convinced that Janis Joplin and John Lennon promised they would come back. Pablo comes up with a plan: he will turn his wife Brigitte and an unemployed actor, Walter Kingkate (François Cluzet), into Janis Joplin and John Lennon to get his hands on the money. Unfortunately, Brigitte and Walter get too carried away with their roles, and instead of solving the problem, the plan spirals out of control, taking Pablo much further than he ever intended…
