Full plot (contains spoilers)
How do you get rid of a husband who refuses to leave the marital home? That is the problem facing Marie-Do, confronted with her husband Bertrand’s stubbornness. Marie-Do has been a docile, sensible woman—perhaps too sensible—who one day discovers freedom thanks to Antoine, her lover. So she asks Bertrand to leave, but he clings on, thereby arousing Antoine’s sympathy. Her lover’s compassionate gaze toward her husband exasperates Marie-Do. She will eventually discover that Antoine is a screenwriter who spends his time shaping, as he pleases, the people he encounters or invents.
