The story
After becoming wealthy through selling salt, Ximen Qing maintains a household of wives and concubines while continuing to visit the pleasure quarters. He encounters Pan Jinlian when her laundry pole falls in front of him. With Madam Wang acting as matchmaker, the two become involved after killing Wu Dalang, and Pan Jinlian joins Ximen Qing’s household as his fifth concubine. Finding herself among an already crowded household, she faces competition from his other wives and concubines as she seeks to secure her power and position.

After becoming wealthy from selling salt, the rich Ximen Qing is a womanizer with a household full of wives and concubines, yet he still enjoys visiting the pleasure quarters. One day, as he wanders the street, Pan Jinlian’s laundry pole falls in front of him, and he meets her. With Madam Wang acting as matchmaker, the two get together after killing Wu Dalang, and Pan Jinlian becomes Ximen Qing’s fifth concubine. Although Pan Jinlian has officially joined Ximen Qing’s household, it is crowded with his wives and concubines. To secure her power and position, she engages in a battle of wits and a struggle for power with Ximen Qing’s other wives and concubines. In the end, Ximen Qing dies from excessive sexual indulgence, and his household begins to decline.
