Two friends’ carefree summer road trip takes an uneasy turn when a red-haired young woman joins them and a man in a black car pursues her.
The story
Two friends use their savings to buy an old coupe, convert it into a makeshift convertible, and set off on a directionless summer road trip. Their days unfold through playful detours and small acts of mischief, from swimming in a lake to asking strangers for directions. After briefly giving an elderly peasant woman a lift, they pick up Anna, a young red-haired woman by the roadside. Their easygoing journey becomes more uncertain when they realize a man in a black car is looking for her. Anna offers little explanation about her connection to the mysterious Jeannot, while one of the friends grows increasingly captivated by her.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
Two buddies decide to make the most of their summer vacation by taking a road trip. With their 8,000 crowns, they find a Mazda 626 Coupé 1600, which they turn into a convertible and decorate with French license plates so the police will leave them alone. And off they go, wherever the road takes them—east or west, it makes no difference: the countryside is very pretty in either direction, and, as the song says, “We’ll find a place where we can smoke in peace, where the sun doesn’t heat the bottles too much, where the wind scatters bird droppings around us, where we can enjoy whatever we like and calmly keep watch for someone coming, someone who knows we’re sitting there and will say, ‘Hi, guys.’” They would quite like to spice up their escapade by meeting a Romanian woman, a Hungarian woman... but first they pick up an elderly peasant woman armed with a rake, for just a few yards. She wishes them luck in meeting a young girl, and that’s exactly what happens: they pick one up as she’s kneeling by the roadside. The journey continues according to the three heroes’ whims: for example, ignoring a bend in the road, cheating an ice-cream seller, swimming in a lake, asking some gullible “naturals” for directions to hell, driving three to a car, and squatting in a country villa... Despite their carefree nature, they are rather worried because a man in a black car is chasing them—or, rather, looking for Anna, who is hiding in their car. She offers no explanation of her relationship with “Jeannot,” the mysterious man, but seems to be playing cat and mouse with everyone, especially Radek, who is charmed by “her pretty laugh, her beautiful red hair, her soft peach-like fuzz,” though he will not go through with it. This lovely journey will come to an end, and, as all good things must, it ends in a surprising way.
