Full plot (contains spoilers)
João da Grécia marries Maria, who is 40 years younger than he is. One day, he saves the life of Deodato, a boy who had become lost by a lagoon, carrying him on his shoulders while riding horseback through a stormy night. The first manifestation of his passion’s madness comes on Good Friday, when he whips Deodato, now an adult, driven by unfounded jealousy. He then leaves for the Amazon with the intention of becoming rich and thus making up, in his wife’s eyes, for the vast age difference between them.
