The story
Aksel is an 11-year-old Danish boy living with his mother and older sister. His father drinks and repeatedly forgets plans with him, leaving Aksel looking elsewhere for role models. He starts admiring the neighborhood’s cool immigrant boys, drawn to their gold chains and fancy cars, and decides he wants to become a Muslim. During autumn break, he spends time with Fatima and Annika, two girls his own age. Together, they prepare for a Eurovision-style song contest at the youth club while Aksel tries to work out what becoming a Muslim would actually involve.
