A financially struggling Viennese coffeehouse owner and his landlord stage a business charade to impress the landlord’s visiting family.
The story
Johann Stanzerl, owner of a struggling Viennese coffeehouse, and Mustafa Öztürk, a successful businessman of Turkish descent who owns the premises, appear together on a television show to promote their businesses and celebrate integration. The live appearance descends into a brawl, while Johann’s mounting debts and unpaid rent leave him facing eviction. Mustafa has his own problem: he has exaggerated the scale of his business to his conservative Turkish family, and his father-in-law, known as the General, is coming to visit. Mustafa offers to withdraw the eviction suit and forgive Johann’s arrears if Johann lends him the coffeehouse and pretends to be his employee during the visit.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
A joint television appearance by Johann Stanzerl, the owner of a Viennese coffeehouse, and Mustafa Öztürk, a businessman of Turkish descent, on the Barbara Karlich Show was supposed to be presented as an example of successful integration and to promote both their businesses. Instead, the appearance spirals out of control on live television and ends in a brawl. Johann is in financial trouble: his coffeehouse is on the verge of collapse, and he is hopelessly in debt. He has also been unable to pay rent for months, so Mustafa, who is also his landlord, files an eviction lawsuit. Johann can barely sleep, and when he finally does drift off, he is plagued by nightmares, so he goes to see psychiatrist Dr. Eugen. Mustafa, by contrast, is financially successful, but can hardly enjoy his triumph over Johann because his extremely conservative Anatolian father-in-law, the General, has announced that he is coming to visit. Mustafa has greatly exaggerated the size of his business to his Turkish family, making it seem much bigger than it really is. Determined to avoid losing face at all costs, Mustafa proposes that Johann let him use his premises for a week and pretend to be one of Mustafa’s employees for the duration of the visit. In return, Mustafa will withdraw the eviction lawsuit and forgive Johann’s rental arrears. Johann accepts the offer. The General surprises Mustafa and Sabrie by telling them that he has come for the circumcision celebration of Mustafa’s son, Kemal. He has already had the donkey traditionally associated with the family celebration delivered. While Sabrie welcomes the circumcision, Mustafa is rather opposed to the idea. However, because he is financially dependent on the General, he initially agrees. Mustafa’s son himself does not want to be circumcised at all. Only after Kemal’s sister, Zeynep, threatens to circumcise him at night while he is asleep does Kemal agree, though he makes financial demands of his parents in return. When Johann learns that the circumcision is planned to take place at his premises, he fears that he will lose his last regular customers because of it and tries to influence Kemal by telling him about the possible negative consequences of circumcision. Kemal then starts researching online, but his sister stops him. Johann therefore gives him printed documents. After hearing the General describe his own circumcision with a razor blade and salt being sprinkled into the open wound, Kemal flees to the Stanzerls. Johann wants to help him and try to prevent the circumcision. However, he intends to do so in a way that will make Mustafa lose face, allowing Johann to get his premises back. As part of the plan, Sofie accidentally puts a sleeping pill in the General’s tea; it was meant for the circumciser. After Mustafa tells Johann that he also wants to help his son by only pretending to go through with the circumcision, Johann calls off the action he had planned. At the celebration, squid rings are presented in place of the foreskin. The General, already asleep, is put on a bus to Istanbul at Vienna’s main railway station. Mustafa and Johann agree to restore both businesses to their original state.
