A group of pupils navigates puberty, attraction, insecurity and classmate bullying at Århus Cathedral School.
The story
The film follows a class of students from their second to fourth year at Århus Cathedral School between 1958 and 1960. As they experience puberty, the pupils grapple with attraction, insecurity, love, guilt and emerging sexual awareness. Classmate bullying first targets Mona and later Elin, the class’s most mature girl, whose qualities prompt jealousy among the other girls and uncertainty among the boys. Gradually excluded by her classmates, Elin also receives no support from her emotionally cold parents. Niels-Ole, the class’s most prominent boy, pays little attention to his female classmates and instead takes an interest in younger Maj-Britt.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
The film follows a class of students from their second to fourth year at Århus Cathedral School in the years 1958–1960. During the first years of puberty, the main characters gain experience with attraction to the opposite sex, insecurity, love, and guilt, among other things through their budding sexual awareness and the class’s bullying of first Mona (Hanne Sørensen) and later Elin (Eva Gram Schjoldager). Elin is the most mature girl in the class, making the other girls jealous and the boys feel unsure of themselves. Gradually, she is frozen out of the group and receives no support from her emotionally cold parents. The most prominent boy in the class, Niels-Ole (Jan Johansen), is not interested in the girls in his class but shows great interest in the younger, pretty Maj-Britt (Lone Elliot).
