Full plot (contains spoilers)
Two soldiers caught in a thunderstorm find a room at an inn near the Rhine. They are forced to share it with a third guest, who arrives just after them. The man has a fortune in diamonds, which he trades in. When he wakes up, one of the two soldiers, who is also a doctor, finds the diamond merchant dead in the room; his travelling companion has disappeared. The doctor is arrested and shot. However, the real culprit, who has made a fortune, will eventually be unmasked. He is Jean-Frédéric Taillefer. This inn has nothing to do with the “murder den” that was the Auberge de Peyrebeille, with which it is often confused.
