The story
Agathe Langlois, a young English teacher from Paris, has just earned tenure and hopes to be transferred back to the city. Instead, she is assigned to a rural middle school in the village of Trouilly-sur-Selle. She lodges with Gilbert and Simone, an eccentric couple who rent her a room beneath their roof. At school, Agathe finds that her new pupils are particularly unruly, while her colleagues hold her in contempt. Faced with a posting far removed from the life she wanted, she has to find a way to adapt to an unfamiliar rural environment.

Agathe Langlois, a young Parisian English teacher, has just learned that she has been granted tenure. Hoping to be transferred to Paris, she is eager to find out where she will be posted, only to end up at a rural middle school in the village of Trouilly-sur-Selle. Put up by an eccentric couple, Gilbert and Simone, who offer her a room under the eaves, she realizes that her new students are particularly unruly and earns the contempt of her colleagues. Agathe must adapt to this new environment, which is nothing like what she had hoped for.
