A scholarship student arriving at a South Tyrolean boarding school is drawn into a generations-old feud between rival groups of pupils.

The story

Thirteen-year-old Martina lives in a Berlin housing estate with her single mother and younger brother. A chance to win a scholarship brings her to the prestigious Johann-Sigismund-Gymnasium, a boarding school in the fictional Alpine town of Kirchberg. There, tough Jo, good-natured Matze and little Uli make the school’s rules clear: boarding students and day students from the surrounding countryside are enemies, as they have been for generations. Headmaster Justus Bökh’s patience and principal Kreuzkamm’s strictness have done little to ease the feud. Though Martina would rather focus on her studies, she is pulled into the conflict and determined not to let her new friends down.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

The film revolves around the lives of students at a boarding school, the fictional Johann-Sigismund-Gymnasium in the equally fictional Alpine town of Kirchberg. The story focuses on friendship, adventure, and the challenges of everyday school life. When 13-year-old Martina, who lives with her single mother and little brother in a high-rise housing estate in Berlin, gets the chance to win a scholarship to the prestigious South Tyrolean Johann-Sigismund-Gymnasium, she is thrilled. But as soon as she arrives in the idyllic Alpine town of Kirchberg, tough Jo, good-natured Matze, and little Uli make it clear to her that there are rules. The town kids at the boarding school and the “day students” from the surrounding countryside do not mix; on the contrary, they are enemies, and have been for generations. The adults are unable to change that either: the kind-hearted boarding-school headmaster, Justus Bökh, tries patience, while the school principal, Kreuzkamm, tries strictness, but neither gets anywhere—especially since she is also the mother of Ruda, the leader of the day students. Then there is the mysterious dropout known as the Non-Smoker, who lives in a railway carriage. Martina really just wants to study for her scholarship. But she is immediately caught up in the conflict between the rival cliques. She cannot, and does not want to, let her new friends down. The plan to end the age-old feud with a joint play does not work. The divide between the boarding students and the day students is simply too deep. Only a dramatic event changes everything.
