A lonely young girl in postwar rural France waits for a promised escape, until an aviator falls from the sky into her life.
The story
In the countryside of northern France after the First World War, young Juliette lives with her father Raphaël, a gruff veteran, after her mother’s death. Dreamy and inclined to keep to herself, she is disliked by other villagers, particularly the men. One day, a woman she meets by the river tells Juliette that “scarlet sails” will come to carry her far away. Juliette holds onto this prediction, and it appears to move toward fulfillment when a handsome aviator literally falls from the sky into her life.

In the countryside of northern France after the First World War, Juliette, a young girl whose mother has died, lives with her father Raphaël, a gruff war veteran. One day, by the river, a woman predicts that “scarlet sails” will come to take her far away. Juliette continues to hope for this until the day the prophecy seems to come true, when a handsome aviator literally falls out of the sky onto her.
