After their father wakes from a five-year coma, four siblings try to hide that they sold the villa he loves.
The story
Sergio Lombardi, a widower and father of four, has been in a coma for five years. While he is unconscious, his son Alex’s serious financial trouble leads the siblings to sell their father’s beloved villa and divide the money. When Sergio unexpectedly wakes, the children cannot bring themselves to tell him what they have done. Before the new owner begins restoration, they let Sergio return to the villa and attempt to restore its familiar appearance, even buying back some of its old furniture. Their increasingly difficult deception brings the siblings together again and draws attention to the separate problems each is struggling to resolve.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
Sergio Lombardi has been in a coma for five years. He is a widower with four children: twins Oreste and Giacinto, Alex, and Fanny. Since Alex is in serious financial trouble, he and his siblings sell their father’s villa and split the proceeds. But then something unexpected happens: Sergio suddenly wakes up from his coma. His children don’t have the courage to tell him that they have sold the villa he was so attached to. Before the new owner begins restoration work, the four siblings decide to keep quiet and let their father move back into the villa. To stop Sergio from discovering the truth, they refurnish the house, buying back at least some of the old furniture. Despite considerable difficulties, their charade seems to be working. It also forces Sergio’s children to spend more time together, gradually bringing them back together as a family. Little by little, all the problems preventing the four siblings from finding stability in their lives come to light: Alex is a reckless man who can’t get his act together; Fanny is still in love with her husband and can’t get over their breakup; Giacinto has isolated himself from everyone to pursue his ambitions and can’t find happiness; and Oreste has a job he hates. A family lunch is held at the villa, attended by Fanny’s husband as well, since she hasn’t had the courage to tell her father that she and her husband have split up. Sergio encourages Oreste to pursue his dream of writing an opera of his own, and Oreste does indeed begin to work toward it. At last, Alex plucks up the courage to tell his father the whole truth, even though his siblings urge him to keep quiet. Alex decides to buy the villa back, so he sells the club; he and his siblings will then be able to use the money they got from selling the villa to buy it back. But the current owner, Teo, has no intention of giving it up. So Giacinto, Oreste, and Alex persuade Fanny to go out to dinner with the buyer, who was a childhood friend of theirs and has always had a soft spot for her. But the plan falls apart when Fanny secretly calls her husband for help. He shows up, punches Teo, and takes Fanny away; the couple get back together. All that remains is to tell Sergio the truth, but there is no need: he had already decided to sell his property because, after his wife’s death, the villa had become associated with painful memories. In the end, Sergio leaves the villa, taking one last look at the home where he and his wife raised their family, and departs with his children.
