A worker’s murder at a slaughterhouse unfolds amid a dispute between animal-rights activists and its management.

The story

Every morning, Greenlife animal-rights activists block access to the Chevalier slaughterhouses in Forcalquier, near Manosque. Their online report shows footage of animals being mistreated during slaughter; the management dismisses it as fake news. One morning, a worker who deboned and trimmed meat is found dead in a slaughterhouse cold room, with a sign around his neck asking, “Can they suffer?” Commander Samira Masson, in charge of the investigation, begins looking into the killing amid the activists’ allegations and the management’s denials.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

Every morning, activists from the animal-rights group Greenlife block access to the Chevalier slaughterhouses in Forcalquier, in the Manosque area. The anti-speciesist activists have posted a report online about the slaughter of animals, showing footage of animals being mistreated which, according to the slaughterhouse management, is nothing but a tissue of fake news. But one morning, the body of a worker who deboned and trimmed meat is found hanging from a hook in a cold room at the slaughterhouses, with a sign around his neck reading, “Can they suffer?” Commander Samira Masson, who is in charge of the investigation, searches the victim’s room and discovers that Pierre Luchaire is an undercover police officer who belonged to the food-fraud enforcement brigade, whose jurisdiction covers all of France. The IGPN, the “police of the police,” sends Commander Étienne Barjac to investigate the officer’s murder. The internal affairs investigators put pressure on Commander Masson and reproach her for not having sealed off the slaughterhouses, which have become a crime scene.
