Full plot (contains spoilers)
Alberto Sajevo, a university professor in Turin, happens to meet Lisa one day—the terrorist who, twelve years earlier, had tried unsuccessfully to kill him by shooting him in the head. Sentenced to thirty years, Lisa is now under a semi-liberty regime: she can leave prison but must return every evening. The professor, having just recovered after the mandatory rehabilitation sessions necessitated by the bullet still lodged in his skull, begins following her out of curiosity and perhaps a desire for revenge, eventually managing to speak with her and win her friendship. At first, Lisa does not recognize him and mistakes him for a suitor. But when the professor reveals who he is, their exchange grows increasingly heated and turns into a confrontation. After coming to terms with their respective positions in the past, the two part on peaceful terms, as the professor prepares to leave for Switzerland, where he will undergo surgery to have the bullet removed from his head.
