The story
Louis Vigné, an elderly, modest retired civil servant, has been living peacefully with his wife at the close of an uneventful life. When she dies, he finds himself alone among other people and objects, and alone with himself.

Louis Vigné, an elderly man and modest retired civil servant, is peacefully nearing the end of an uneventful life alongside his wife. When she dies, he finds himself alone—alone with other people, alone with objects, alone with himself. Over the course of a few days, he will come to realize how much happiness he has experienced, and will find peace only in the small cemetery where his wife is buried.
