When Zoe writes to a love-advice column saying she intends to leave Tommaso, she unknowingly asks her own partner for help.
The story
Together for ten years, Tommaso and Zoe seem unaffected by time, but each has something the other does not know. Tommaso is facing a creative crisis as he struggles to finish his new novel, and has been writing a love-advice column for a little-known newspaper under the pseudonym Gabriel García Márquez. Zoe, meanwhile, is experiencing a profound relationship crisis and intends to leave him. Unable to find the right words or moment, she writes to the column asking for help, unaware that she is asking her own partner. Shaken, Tommaso chooses not to speak openly with her and begins corresponding with her, trying to understand the reasons behind the possible end of their relationship.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
Together for ten years now, Tommaso and Zoe do not seem to be affected by the passage of time. Even the best couples, however, hide secrets: what Zoe does not know about Tommaso is that, facing a creative crisis as he struggles to finish his new novel, he has for some time been writing an advice column on love for a little-known newspaper. What Tommaso does not know about Zoe, meanwhile, is that she is going through a profound relationship crisis. Then one day, among the messages sent to Gabriel García Márquez—the pseudonym Tommaso uses to sign his advice and replies to the many different relationship questions readers send him—there is a letter from Zoe. In it, she says she intends to leave Tommaso but, unable to find the right words, way, or moment, asks the column for help. She does not realize, however, that she is asking her own partner for help. Shaken, Tommaso decides not to speak to her openly about it. Instead, he begins corresponding with her, trying to understand the real reasons behind the possible end of their relationship and to mend cracks and fractures that had until then been invisible to him. But although the quiet devastation left by years together in a couple like theirs—and in that of their friend Umberto and his partner Elena—cannot pass without painful consequences, it always conceals unexpected and surprising transformations in the end.
