After his father loses his glassblowing job when the Count’s traditional glassworks goes bankrupt, the family moves from its own house into a rented apartment. Full plot (contains spoilers)
Twelve-year-old Florian, known as “Flo,” lives in an idyllic village in Bavaria with his father Andreas, his heavily pregnant mother Sandra, and their collie, Lassie. Flo and Lassie are best friends. Florian’s father loses his job as a glassblower when Count von Sprengel’s traditional glassworks has to file for bankruptcy. As a result, Flo’s family recently had to move from their own house into a rented apartment. The landlady doesn’t like Lassie and insists on the lease, which allows only small pets. So Andreas temporarily places Lassie in the care of the Count, whose granddaughter Priscilla is supposed to look after her. Florian is devastated that he has to give Lassie up. The Count is also facing serious financial difficulties because of the bankruptcy. At short notice, he has to travel to the North Sea to clear out his holiday home there. Priscilla persuades him to take her and Lassie along. After the caretaker mistreats Lassie, she seizes an unobserved moment to escape and sets off on an adventurous journey back to southern Germany to find Flo, who has meanwhile also gone looking for his dog.
