Full plot (contains spoilers)

A drifter named Frank Maurice is hiding in the back of a truck belonging to the Nice-based Spada company when the driver asks him to get out so he can refuel at a nearby gas station. Frank asks the station owner to give him something to eat, even though he has no money. Nick, the owner, kindly serves him a meal and offers him a job. Reluctant at first, the drifter agrees when he sees Nick’s wife, with whom he falls in love and later becomes a lover. He then helps her get rid of her husband, first by knocking him out by surprise. Nick is only injured and ends up in the hospital, not understanding what happened to him. The drifter makes him believe that he slipped in his bathtub. In a second attempt, this time successfully, he knocks out Nick, who is drunk, and puts him in his car, which he sends plunging into a ravine. He makes the crime look like an accident. Later, because he is believed to be responsible for the young woman’s death in a car accident, he is sentenced to death.
