A chaotic houseboat trip brings three troubled men together as one confronts an unexpected pregnancy and the question of fatherhood.

The story

Shortly after their second anniversary, Cora tells her boyfriend Finke that she is pregnant, although they had deliberately decided not to have children. Cora wants time to think about the pregnancy and their relationship, but the anniversary boat trip Finke organized cannot be canceled. He invites Henner, a married pastor who has grown estranged from his faith, and Simon, a construction worker with thwarted acting ambitions, to join him on a weeklong houseboat journey toward the Müritz. None of the three has a boating license, and each brings personal troubles aboard. Their incompetence quickly causes mishaps, while their behavior on the water creates friction with other boaters and the police.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

Shortly after their second anniversary, his girlfriend Cora confronts the infantile Finke with the fact that she is pregnant. The couple, who had deliberately decided not to have children, is thrown into an existential crisis. The aspiring starlet Cora wants some time out to think about the pregnancy and their relationship. However, the boat trip Finke organized for their anniversary cannot be canceled. So Finke suggests a trip together to Henner and Simon, badminton buddies he barely knows. The three men from Stuttgart set off on a houseboat toward the Müritz for a week. None of them has a boating license, but each has very different worries. Henner, a married pastor, has meanwhile grown estranged from his faith, while Simon, a construction worker whose acting ambitions have long come to nothing, has cheated his employer Werner, a rocker, out of money. As a result, Werner is pursuing Simon with two fellow rockers. The boat trip goes about as chaotically as expected. Because of their incompetence, the three damage some of the boat’s equipment as soon as they set off. During a swimming excursion, it emerges that Henner, who is at the helm, never learned to swim. They also get into conflict with the police by ignoring the rules and make themselves unpopular with other boaters. When Finke injures the daughter of a family who are also on a boating trip while ashore, he has to look after her brother for a day. This forces him to take responsibility, and for the first time he seriously considers his feelings and his attitude toward having a child and their relationship. Over the course of the week, their shared experiences lead to a genuine friendship between the three men, and they talk to one another about their worries. Convinced by his new experiences and after talking with Henner, Finke tries to have a heart-to-heart with Cora. Cora also wants to have a clarifying conversation. She wants to keep the baby, even if she has to raise it alone. But the two are unable to reach each other by phone. Cora wants to speak in person. With Henner’s help, she arranges to meet Finke at a boat landing. There, she finds Finke in a compromising situation with one of the women attending a bachelorette party. He had met her earlier, and she has fallen in love with him. Enraged, Cora leaves in front of their friends and the other partygoers—and presumably leaves Finke too. Finke then decides to fight for his relationship. He makes up with his friends and, together with Henner, confronts Simon’s pursuer, Wolfgang. During the confrontation, it turns out that Wolfgang can’t swim either. Before rescuing him from the water, the two blackmail Wolfgang into forgiving Simon’s debt. As a “thank-you,” the rockers blow up the boat shortly before it is due back. Nevertheless, returning the destroyed boat turns things around for the better: thanks to all-inclusive insurance, the three are not liable for either the missing equipment or the sunken boat. Finally, Finke goes to Cora and reconciles with her. The two decide to raise the child together. Simon returns to acting. Together with Henner, he remains a friend of the family, and they become the child’s godfathers.
