The story
Two young girls seek out young men and quickly find success, but their fathers disapprove. The girls flee by rowboat to an island inhabited by gods, nymphs, fauns, and water devils. The young men follow them, and soon the fathers arrive too, accompanied by the bachelors. The story’s initial conflict is the girls’ pursuit of their own romantic interests against their fathers’ plans for them.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
Two young girls are looking for young men and quickly find success. Their fathers disapprove, since they have already chosen marriage candidates for their daughters themselves. In their view, two of their skat-playing friends, both still bachelors, would be suitable matches. The girls flee in a rowboat to an island inhabited by gods, nymphs, fauns, and water devils. The young men follow them, and soon the fathers arrive as well, along with the bachelors. The gods, and Amor in particular, play all sorts of games and pranks on the humans, bringing the young couples together. Circe turns the fathers into little pigs, and at the end they leave the island at the rear of a triumphal procession.
