A neo-Nazi group leader’s new relationship brings his racist beliefs into conflict with family life.

The story

Teppo, a leading figure in an East Finnish neo-Nazi group, meets Sari, the woman he dreams of, and moves in with her. He soon learns that her son, Rhamadhan, is dark-skinned. The new relationship brings Teppo’s role in the group into conflict with his home life, and also creates tensions with his half-brother Harri. The story’s central setup places Teppo’s extremist commitments alongside his developing family circumstances, as he confronts the fact that Sari’s child is among the people targeted by the group’s racist ideology.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

Lionheart tells the story of Teppo (Peter Franzén), a leading figure in an East Finnish neo-Nazi group, who meets the woman of his dreams, Sari (Laura Birn). After moving in with Sari, Teppo learns that her son, Rhamadhan (Yusufa Sidibeh), is dark-skinned. Teppo’s relationship causes conflicts with his role in the neo-Nazi group and with his half-brother Harri (Jasper Pääkkönen). In its themes, the film is somewhat reminiscent of the 1998 film American History X, which deals with neo-Nazism and racism in the United States. Both films depict how the far-right brothers’ attitudes toward dark-skinned people change, and how the older brother has to look after his younger brother.
