When a childhood friend returns to Marseille seeking a fresh start, Omar's wish to help her puts his choices and his relationship with Yasmine in focus.
The story
Omar, a young man from Marseille, runs a day camp for children and spends time with his girlfriend, Yasmine, and their circle of friends. He and 17-year-old Yasmine have agreed not to have sex before marriage, though Omar’s mother advises them not to rush into marriage. Their routine changes when Carmen, once close to Omar and known to the group since childhood, returns after years away. She tells Omar she wants to start over after working as a prostitute for seven years. Omar offers her a place to stay for the night and work at the camp, prompting Yasmine to ask why he is so determined to help her. He admits feeling guilty about not helping Carmen years earlier.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
Omar is a young man from Marseille who runs a day camp for children in the heart of the city. He often hangs out with his girlfriend, Yasmine, and his group of friends, some of whom also work at the camp, usually thanks to him. He and his 17-year-old girlfriend, Yasmine, have decided to “save themselves” and not have sex before marriage. When Omar finally introduces Yasmine to his mother, she calls them “babies”; she warns them that marriage is a commitment and advises them to wait a little. One day, Carmen arrives—a beautiful young woman whom several of the guys in the group have known since primary school but lost touch with. Omar is thrown by Carmen’s arrival, as he used to be especially close to her. When she finds herself alone with Omar, Carmen tells him that for the past seven years she had been “working as a prostitute,” but that now she wants to “start over.” Omar gives Carmen a place to stay for the night and offers her work with him at the day camp. When Yasmine asks Omar why he wants to help Carmen so much, he tells her he feels ashamed because seven years earlier, when Carmen’s mother had kicked her out of the house, he had done nothing to help the girl, who had started “doing all sorts of things.” Day by day, rumors about Carmen’s former occupation spread through the group. One of the guys is attracted to her, while others ignore her because she is “dirty.” Carmen eventually leaves the camp and takes a job as a saleswoman nearby. Soon, Omar and Yasmine’s relationship begins to falter. Yasmine starts wearing makeup and one evening suggests that she and Omar have sex. He refuses, but at the same time he is constantly tempted to look after Carmen and protect her, even though she assures him that she is used to managing on her own.
