Five people or families find that unexpected prizes bring complications rather than uncomplicated good fortune.

The story

The anthology follows five prizes and the trouble they set in motion. A maid’s mink-coat win sparks rivalry with her employer, putting the employer’s business contract at risk. A man awarded a luxurious meal encounters journalists and staff eager to hurry him along. A billposter wins an evening with a famous actress, while a married couple independently sets off for a yacht trip with other companions, each believing the other knows nothing of the prize. In the final story, a family’s lottery windfall sends them on a consequential shopping spree in Paris.
