Chris Marker

A documentary survey of Siberia’s people and modernization uses playful digressions to explore how commentary can shape the meaning of images.

The story

Filmed in Siberia, this documentary pairs images of the region with voice-over commentary. It surveys the lives of local people and the modernization of society, as well as gold prospectors. The film also breaks from its survey with several playful digressions: a cartoon about mammoths, a mock advertisement praising reindeer, and a sequence in Yakutsk that demonstrates how the same images can take on different meanings when accompanied by different voice-over interpretations.
