When compliance officer Ana Bergmann questions suspicious invoices, undercover investigator Carsten is preparing to retrieve a criminal gang’s data from its illegal-boxing-club headquarters.
The story
On a Friday evening in Munich, compliance officer Ana Bergmann spots unusual amounts in her company’s financial records and tries to raise the discrepancies with CEO Frank Mailing, who is leaving with a client. He is uninterested, even as Ana suspects a consulting firm has been submitting excessive bills for years. Elsewhere, undercover police investigator Carsten is assigned a final operation: retrieve a criminal gang’s data from its headquarters and send it to police servers. To reach the gang’s base, he has befriended petty criminal Ozzy, whose business with the gang’s leader can take him to an old factory club hosting illegal boxing matches.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
On Friday evening, Ana Bergmann is working in an office in Munich. She is employed in the compliance department of a large company, where she makes sure the rules are followed. While reviewing the financial records, she notices some unusual invoice amounts. It cannot be quickly cleared up over the phone. Outside the building, however, she runs into CEO Frank Mailing, who is just about to leave with a client. She asks to speak with him about the discrepancies, but Mailing is not particularly interested. The client unexpectedly tells Ana to simply come along. In the taxi, Ana tries to speak with him again: there could be fraud worth hundreds of millions involved, since a consulting firm has been issuing completely excessive bills for its services for years. Mailing brushes her off and calls her an idealist out of touch with reality. In an apartment, Carsten, an undercover police investigator, receives instructions for one final operation. He is to retrieve important data belonging to a criminal gang from a computer at its headquarters and transfer it to the police’s own servers via satellite link. To get into the gang’s headquarters, which is run by an Austrian known as “the Viennese,” Carsten has befriended petty criminal Ozzy. Ozzy has some business to settle with the Viennese and can therefore take Carsten to the old factory building. This private club hosts illegal boxing matches, and people drink and gamble there. At one such fight, a bet will determine whether Ozzy can go into business with the Viennese. Ana is also at the factory building with Mailing and the client. She confronts Mailing about what she has discovered. He tells her that he saved the company with these scams and that she should consider keeping quiet and enjoying the perks as well. Ana happens to run into Ozzy and Carsten. Ozzy is her brother, and his real name is Yannic. She learns from him that much of what she knows about him is false and was arranged so that he could work undercover. Ana is now also in danger, since she has uncovered Mailing’s dealings and thereby threatens his business with the Viennese. Yannic manages to copy the data onto a USB drive, and takes the opportunity to flee with Ana as the boxing match reaches its crucial rounds. Ozzy wins his bet with the Viennese. As Ana and Yannic are about to drive away, Ozzy comes up to them. He tells Yannic that he broke his heart, then stabs him. Ana drives off with the gravely wounded Yannic, who still manages to send the data.
