A former alcoholic and drug user leads an investigation into the killing of an undercover officer while searching for a mole within his own team.

The story

When criminals in the drug scene shoot an undercover investigator dead, former alcoholic and former drug user Fredo Schulz is put in charge of the special commission investigating the case. His superior, Simon Kowalski, suspects there is a mole in the ranks and believes Schulz can be trusted. To find the killers, Schulz recruits Dakota, a former dealer recently released from prison, as an informant. She passes information to Schulz and his assistant, Filipovic, while Schulz also tries to identify the person responsible for the undercover agent’s death. The commission focuses on Hassan Moussa, whose fingerprints were found in the dead agent’s apartment, as Dakota’s past relationship with drug user Pablo complicates her work.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

When an undercover investigator is shot dead by criminals in the drug scene, Fredo Schulz is tasked with leading the special commission investigating the case. Schulz, of all people—a former alcoholic and former drug user—is to take on the job, but his superior, Simon Kowalski, suspects there is a mole within their own ranks and believes he can trust Schulz. To get clues about the killers, Schulz plants Dakota, a former dealer, in the drug scene as an informant. In return, she is released from prison early and is supposed to provide Schulz with information. Dakota knows the scene inside out, and succeeds in passing important information to Schulz and his assistant, Filipovic. At the same time, Schulz tries to find the mole responsible for the death of the last undercover agent. The special commission comes to suspect Hassan Moussa strongly, because fingerprints were found in the apartment of the undercover agent who was shot dead. Dakota is to help obtain the final evidence, while repeatedly having to fend off Pablo, a drug addict who is her ex-boyfriend and the father of her daughter, and wants to win her back. Schulz realizes that Filipovic and Dakota are connected by more than just work. He warns his colleague not to go too far, because that would endanger not only their investigation but also the life of their informant. During a planned raid on Moussa, while he is distributing drugs to his street-level dealers, Schulz deliberately leaves his colleague Axel Gondorf out of it, believing him to be the traitor. When Gondorf sees through the plan, he warns Moussa by phone. This exposes Dakota, and Moussa escapes the police operation with her as a hostage. He lets Dakota go, slips her a note with the mole’s name on it, and goes into hiding. Gondorf is supposed to help him escape, but fearing he will be held accountable as the undercover agent’s murderer, he shoots Moussa. Schulz and Filipovic arrest Gondorf, as well as their superior, Simon Kowalski, whose name is also on Moussa’s note because he had been taking a cut from Gondorf’s dealings. Finally, Pablo shoots Dakota when she rejects him once again, and then turns himself in to the police. Filipovic subsequently quits the force.
