A woman revisits her childhood as the daughter of struggling livestock farmers, where her own cheerful world contrasts with her parents’ mounting worries.
The story
Louise, an anxious and depressed teacher in her thirties, revisits the past and remembers herself at ten, when she was known as Louloute. Her parents were livestock farmers in the Pays d’Auge, struggling with deep debt and living in constant fear about the future. Their crisis unfolded day by day, largely beyond Louloute’s understanding. She experienced childhood as a cheerful world of her own, filled with cows, dreams, chunky wool sweaters, and the television program Club Dorothée. The account presents the contrast between her bright, imaginative perspective and the financial strain weighing on her family.
