The story
After their father dies, Louise, Fabien and Estelle must take responsibility for their brother Jacques, whom their father had cared for. Jacques has schizophrenia and is unable to live independently, leaving his siblings to work out how to support him. He relies on money they give him and is a considerable burden; the family recognize that he cannot simply be left on his own. With Fabien already having a family and Estelle’s partner expecting a child, Louise initially takes on his care while balancing her own work and personal commitments.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
After their father’s death, the siblings Louise, Fabien and Estelle have to look after their brother Jacques, who has schizophrenia, is unkempt and overweight. Their father had taken care of him until then. Jacques is clearly incapable of living independently and does not contribute much to getting things done; he is mostly a burden. He lives on money his siblings give him, consumes huge quantities of beer and cigarettes, and his personal hygiene leaves much to be desired. Secretly, he is in love with the cashier at the small supermarket. His siblings know they cannot leave him to live on his own. After much back and forth, he agrees to sell the house, but later withdraws his consent, which leads to a serious confrontation with Laurent, Louise’s boyfriend. Since Fabien has a family and Estelle’s partner is expecting a child, Louise initially takes care of him. At first, she drives out to see him in the country fairly often, but she has work and personal commitments of her own, so eventually he moves into her apartment temporarily. She stays with Laurent and visits Jacques as often as she can. He gradually opens up to her, but his mood swings and outbursts of anger make him difficult to deal with. Eventually, he tells Louise that his own nature and behavior annoy him just as much, but he does not know where to start; he does not even dare to shower on his own and is deeply ashamed of it. Since Louise will be going to Chile for a year for work, they find Jacques an apartment that he likes very much. At the celebration for the birth of Estelle’s child, Jacques slips away unnoticed and hitchhikes back to his parents’ house. He buys beer at the supermarket and drinks it in the cemetery, breaks into the sold family home, and pensively smokes a cigarette.
