The story

Peter Lustig has lived for years in his caravan on a plot in Im Elchwinkel, where developers plan a huge shopping center and seek to buy the surrounding land. He initially resists, but businessman Hagen Bunkenburg offers him Pölser Castle in exchange for his overgrown property, making Peter curious. After visiting another castle, Peter becomes keen on owning one himself. A Bunkenburg employee posing as a hereditary prince and castle expert praises Pölser Castle and persuades Peter to agree to the exchange. Peter hitches his caravan to a tractor and sets off for his promised new home.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

Peter Lustig has lived for many years in his caravan on a plot of land in Im Elchwinkel, where a huge shopping center is now supposed to be built: the so-called Elchwinkel Center, with an adjoining Bunkenburg Tower. To make the project happen, Bunkenburg AG, the company commissioned to build it, intends to buy all the plots of land. Peter initially resists these plans; but when the shrewd businessman Hagen Bunkenburg offers him Pölser Castle in Möckermark in exchange for his overgrown plot, Peter becomes interested. His neighbor Paschulke is also supposed to exchange his property, in his case for a finca in Mallorca. Peter first visits Bärstadt Castle and is soon enthusiastic about the idea of owning a castle like that himself. One of Bunkenburg’s employees, who passes himself off to Peter as an alleged Hereditary Prince of Moosburg-Schippe and a castle expert, and speaks enthusiastically about Pölser Castle, ultimately persuades Peter to make the exchange. Peter hitches his caravan to a tractor and sets off toward the castle he was promised. Along the way, he stupidly loses his map, but manages to continue the journey with a GPS device he quickly buys. After a long drive, he finally arrives, only to find that the castle is completely dilapidated and in disrepair. At first, the ambitious Peter does not want to give up on the castle and thinks about the restoration work ahead. But after a first night full of nightmares, another surprise awaits him: Peter is visited by the local heritage preservation office. Apparently, they had been looking forward to a new owner, because the heritage authority now expects the new lord of the castle to carry out extensive renovations costing several million euros. Peter realizes he has made the wrong decision. He looks out the purchase contract and, fortunately, remembers the cancellation clause, although the deadline expires at noon. He decides to rescind the contract and heads home in his caravan. But it seems the crafty construction magnate Bunkenburg has already anticipated this, and he sends his two henchmen, Jana Olschewski and Achim Kriechbaum, after Peter to stop him from rescinding the contract before the deadline. The pair try all sorts of tricks; for example, they make his tractor engine explode while Peter is eating a bratwurst at a snack stand. Peter, blessed with wit and ingenuity, promptly borrows two horses and uses them in place of the tractor they set on fire. He is not thrown off course by their further attempts to obstruct him, and manages to return in time and rescind the purchase contract. Together with his neighbor Paschulke, who was likewise thoroughly dissatisfied with his ramshackle finca in Mallorca and has also set off back home, Peter announces at the handover celebration that he wants to continue living in Im Elchwinkel. Since the deadline for withdrawing from the contract expires in just two minutes, the construction tycoon storms off in a fury and accepts defeat. The story ends with Peter once again living peacefully in his caravan, when a representative of a previously unknown real estate agency appears in the garden in front of the caravan to make Peter a “lucrative” offer for his plot in Im Elchwinkel. Peter and Paschulke immediately chase him off the property.
