Full plot (contains spoilers)
The Marquise Teresa di Fontenay, having fallen in love with the journalist Jean Guery, divorces her husband with the intention of marrying the man she loves, but the outbreak of the French Revolution prevents the wedding. Guery, a supporter of the monarchy, goes underground but, after falling into an ambush, is captured by the sans-culottes, who drag him before a court. The trial is presided over by the incorruptible Robespierre. Tallien, a member of the Committee of Public Safety, falls for Teresa, who promises to be his only if he saves Guery from the death sentence. Tallien attacks Robespierre, who is deposed and sentenced to the guillotine, but the tide of opposition will later turn against Tallien as well, and he falls into disgrace. Guery is then executed, and Teresa is left alone.
