The story
Berlin, 1943: 85-year-old Jewish woman Martha Liebermann, widow of the famous painter Max Liebermann, faces a difficult choice. She can continue hoping for an exit permit from the Nazis, or try to flee to Switzerland with help from Hanna Solf and her women-led resistance group. Martha knows that her earlier fame and wealth will not protect her much longer from deportation to a concentration camp. The threat forces her to weigh waiting for permission against the possibility of escape from her beloved homeland.

Berlin, 1943: 85-year-old Jewish woman Martha Liebermann faces a difficult decision. Should the upper-middle-class widow of the famous painter Max Liebermann continue hoping for an exit permit from the Nazis? Or should she flee to Switzerland with the help of Hanna Solf and her women-led resistance group? The elderly woman knows that the fame and wealth of earlier times will no longer protect her from deportation to a concentration camp for much longer. With a heavy heart, Martha decides to leave her beloved homeland illegally. This also means leaving behind the works of her late husband. As Hanna and her friends prepare for the escape, Gestapo Commissioner Teubner sets a trap for them. This also puts Martha’s housekeeper, Luise, in serious danger. To save Luise and the other helpers, Martha makes a courageous decision. She sews the Star of David onto her coat and leaves her apartment for the first time in a long while. She plans to put things in order, but then changes her mind. Martha takes an overdose of sleeping pills and dies a few days later at the Jewish Hospital in Berlin, without ever regaining consciousness. Luise stays by her side until her death.
