Full plot (contains spoilers)

In 1916, during the First World War, German intelligence officer Elsbeth Schragmüller trains the nude dancer “Mata Hari” as a secret agent so she can spy on influential circles in Paris. In Paris, at the salon of her old friend Madame de Dangville, she meets the Russian officer Wladimir (Vadime) de Masloff, who is 18 years her junior. She falls in love with him, and he tells her that he would even be willing to elope with her. He proposes to her on the night before he has to return to the front. Believing that she is now engaged to a Russian officer, she no longer wants to spy for the Germans, but instead for France, an ally of Russia. But her German commanding officers in Antwerp get wind of her plans to defect and ensure that the French become aware of her as a double agent. She is arrested and charged by the French. Her last hope is Vadime, but he no longer wants to hear anything about a marriage proposal. This confirms her guilt to the French. She is sentenced to death and executed on October 15, 1917.
