After prison, a ruined lawyer tries to turn his charm into a way to swindle wealthy women, only to find himself repeatedly outmaneuvered.
The story
Charles, a lawyer, is imprisoned and financially ruined after embezzling money for a woman. Fellow inmates persuade him that his good looks and gallantry could help him swindle women in return. Once released, he places personal advertisements and meets women who appear wealthy and enamored. Yet his plan does not go as expected: instead of controlling these encounters, Charles repeatedly finds himself being taken advantage of. His attempt to exploit romantic interest turns into a series of reversals as he pursues a new life beyond prison.

Charles, a lawyer, is in prison and ruined because of a woman for whom he embezzled money. His fellow inmates convince him that he can swindle women in turn by seducing them, since he is handsome and gallant. When he gets out of prison, he decides to place personal ads and meets his future victims, who all seem rich and in love. But it soon turns out that every time, he is still the one who gets taken for a ride. One of them wants him to kill her husband, another lures him into a trap, and his first accomplice steals a fortune he had borrowed... In the end, chance will avenge him on all those who tried to use him, and, penniless, he will resign himself to becoming a humble pastry chef for the woman who loves him. For now, at least...
