A record producer’s niece secretly pursues a singing career while trying to keep her ambitions—and her identity as a performer—from her uncle and a skeptical love interest.
The story
Since her parents’ death, 17-year-old Susanne Doren has lived with her uncle Hannes, a former schlager star who left public life to care for her and now runs a record company. Though she enjoys schlager, she pretends to prefer classical music because Hannes dislikes modern music. Her friend Silvia introduces her to a young band seeking a singer, and Susanne joins them, planning to compete in a performance while disguising herself to conceal her connection to Hannes. Copywriter-turned-talent scout Rudi discovers her and wants to promote her, but Susanne gives a false name. Meanwhile, she meets private detective Stephan Lentz and, learning that he dislikes female performers, hides her singing ambitions from him too.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
Since her parents’ death, 17-year-old Susanne Doren has lived with her uncle Hannes. He was once a celebrated schlager star, but withdrew from the public eye to take care of Susanne. He is now the owner of the record company Phonoton and discovers new talent. One day, advertising copywriter Rudi Hundt also calls on him and is hired as a talent scout. Some time later, Hannes happens to run into his ex-girlfriend Clara Larsen, who works as a music manager. She regularly plays tennis with the well-known private detective Stephan Lentz. Although Susanne likes listening to schlager music, she pretends to Hannes that she likes only classical music, since he can’t stand modern music. Her friend Silvia introduces Susanne to the band led by the young Robert, which is looking for a singer. Susanne steps in and soon plans to perform in a competition. To avoid being recognized as the record producer’s niece, Susanne disguises herself. At the performance, Rudi Hundt discovers her and wants to market her as a new star. In a panic, Susanne gives her name as Margot Müller. Shortly after her performance, she meets Clara, who offers to become her manager. Clara hopes that Susanne’s success will also bring Hannes back to the stage. At a meeting at Clara’s, Susanne is mistaken for one of Stephan’s clients, but she keeps the detective at a distance with a judo move. Stephan shows up at Clara’s shortly afterward and starts raving about Susanne, who is still there and overhears him. Stephan falls in love with Susanne, who introduces herself to him as Hannes’s niece. When Stephan makes it clear that he can’t stand female performers, Susanne disavows any such ambitions. Since Hannes is annoyed by Rudi Hundt’s previous discoveries, “Margot Müller” is not even allowed to audition for him. Rudi secretly smuggles Susanne and Robert’s band into the recording studio and records a song. He plays it for Hannes, who is delighted. He tells Rudi to find Margot Müller. Since Susanne hasn’t given Rudi an address, he visits all 78 Margot Müllers in the city, but has no luck. Meanwhile, Susanne has fallen in love with Stephan and wants to give up a singing career for him. But Hannes hires Stephan to find the mysterious Margot Müller. Susanne, meanwhile, wants to perform with Robert’s band one more time, in order to secure for them a promised engagement in a musical film. Stephan sees her at this performance and immediately ends the relationship. Susanne is devastated, but now wants to be open about her wish to become a singer. She has the band enter the big hit parade, broadcast on the radio, and sends Stephan a ticket to the show along with her blonde wig, which was part of her disguise. Clara arranges for Hannes to be announced as a singer on the show poster as well. He only finds out about it at the venue and is furious. A short time later, onstage, he sees his niece singing her schlager in deep sadness because Stephan’s seat is empty. Stephan, meanwhile, hears her voice on the radio and immediately drives to the venue. When Susanne stands onstage again with her uncle Hannes after her performance and begins a duet, he is already in the audience. Since Hannes had earlier offered Clara not only the directorship of the Phonoton record company but also his hand in marriage, there is a double happy ending.
