A financially struggling rose grower stakes her family nursery’s future on a new rose while a neighboring gas-station owner pressures her to sell the land he needs to expand.

The story

Monika Lohmeyer inherits her family’s rose nursery, but the business faces serious financial difficulties. She has invested heavily in breeding a new rose variety that would bloom in different colors, building on her father’s earlier experiments; she hopes it can solve the nursery’s financial problems. Meanwhile, neighboring gas-station owner Zappke wants her land for an expansion and pressures her to sell. Monika has resisted the offers, so Zappke and his architect, Fred Klinger, devise a plan to change her mind: without knowing who Klinger really is, she is supposed to develop feelings for him.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

Monika Lohmeyer has inherited from her father the rose nursery that has been in her family for several generations. The young woman is facing serious financial difficulties with the business. She has invested a great deal of money and effort in breeding a new variety of rose that is supposed to bloom in different colors, building on experiments her father had already begun. Such a rose would be a sensation and could solve all her financial problems. Zappke, a gas station owner who runs a station on the neighboring property and wants to expand, puts considerable pressure on her because he is determined to buy the land he urgently needs for his expansion. Together with his architect, Fred Klinger, he devises a plan to change the mind of Monika, who has resisted every offer to buy the property. Without knowing who Klinger really is, she is supposed to develop feelings for him. Monika does indeed fall in love with him, but, contrary to the plan, Fred also falls in love with the young woman. When she accidentally discovers who Fred is, she turns away from him, disappointed. When a storm breaks out, threatening to destroy Monika’s new variety as well, Fred is there to help her. Monika has meanwhile learned from her loyal gardener, Karl Hanke, that Fred resigned from his position shortly after falling in love with her, so there is nothing to prevent her and Fred from reconciling. Just as Monika has made a verbal agreement with the rose breeder Vogt, selling him her “miracle rose,” the rose opens its blooms. Vogt, who has been informed of Monika’s situation by Fred, withdraws from the agreement, and Monika’s rose is awarded the prize for the most beautiful new variety at the rose competition. Zappke, too, now admits defeat. Monika and Fred get married. Fred turns down a new offer from Zappke, saying that he has something better to do, to which the businessman replies, “Yes, yes, I understand—with roses is where love begins.”
