Full plot (contains spoilers)
In 1943, a young Dutch woman named Tiny, the daughter of a wholesale butcher, falls in love with Bernd, a German occupying soldier, and incurs the contempt of her fellow countrymen. Their acquaintance grows into love, and they do not hide it. Tiny stands by Bernd despite her mother’s misgivings, her neighbors’ contempt, and the pastor’s opposition. Before long, however, Bernd is transferred to Italy. When the Netherlands are liberated by the Americans in 1945, the hair of women who had relationships with Germans—women known as “Moffengrieten”—is shaved off. Tiny is among them. When Bernd writes to her from Germany and continues to profess his great love for her, she leaves Holland and goes to Germany to be with him.
