The story

Andrea, a doctor, and Sofia, a television presenter, have been married for several years and have two children, but mounting arguments have brought them to consider divorce. Andrea is developing a machine that can transmit thoughts with his colleague Michele. When Andrea tests it with Sofia, a short circuit makes the spouses switch bodies. Each must suddenly navigate the other’s work: Andrea faces the demands and rivalries of television journalism, while Sofia must deal with the neurosurgery department and people she barely knows. Their first day goes badly, but the experience begins to reveal aspects of their lives that each spouse had kept hidden from the other.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

Andrea, a handsome doctor, and Sofia, a charming television presenter, have been married for several years and have two children. After a number of arguments, they begin to consider divorce. One evening, Andrea is working on a scientific project with his friend and colleague Michele: a machine capable of transmitting thoughts. While testing the machine with Sofia, a short circuit causes husband and wife to switch bodies. Andrea, now in his wife’s body, has to face the challenges of television journalism, dealing with workplace rivalries and his almost complete lack of knowledge of women’s etiquette. Meanwhile, Sofia, having entered Andrea’s mind, must deal with the problems of the neurosurgery department where her husband works and find a way to relate to people she does not know at all, especially Michele. Their first day is disastrous, but the couple learn things the other had kept hidden. From the children’s babysitter’s behavior, Sofia wrongly suspects that she is having an affair with Andrea, a suspicion he immediately denies. In the days that follow, Sofia innocently hands over to Brancati, a colleague and rival of her husband and Michele, both all the research results and the machine the two men had built, which would have secured substantial funding for their research. After they grow closer again, Andrea discovers through flashbacks that his wife had taken account statements in his name to a divorce lawyer. Disappointed by his wife’s behavior, Andrea—in Sofia’s body—decides to leave home and goes to Michele’s. Michele does not believe the account he is given, but agrees to let him stay despite considering Sofia unhinged. Through further flashbacks, the couple reconcile, managing at the last minute to regain the head of neurology’s confidence and the research grant. Meanwhile, Andrea, in an impassioned speech against the standards of behavior and appearance imposed on women, manages to restore his wife’s professional standing, which he had undermined both through his bluntness and his lack of femininity. The now fully reconciled couple manage to switch identities back again—or perhaps not: in the final scene, after their older child calls for his mother, they both turn around, giving the impression that the effeminacy that characterized Andrea during the switch and Sofia’s masculinity have not disappeared.
