Full plot (contains spoilers)
A fishing beach, the sea gradually claiming the land. The struggle between man and the sea, and above all the struggle between tradition and progress. At the heart of the drama are the difficult, almost absurd romantic relationships linking a fisherman, Adelino, recently returned from the war in Africa, and two women: Júlia, a woman of the sea in the old-fashioned sense, and Albertina, a mysterious, wild factory worker. After completing his military service, Adelino returns from overseas to Furadouro, the fishing village near Ovar where he was born. When he arrives, he discovers that Júlia, his former sweetheart, whom he has loved all his life, is now married to his brother, Raimundo. Sad and disillusioned by this betrayal, Adelino sets off in search of work. That is how he meets Albertina, a free-spirited young woman reputed to be promiscuous, who wants only to escape that place. Land, sea, man and progress are intertwined in an ongoing drama. With Albertina, Adelino will find the courage to free himself from the past and believe in the good fortune that still awaits him. Together, they will try to make a new life far away from there.
