Full plot (contains spoilers)
Gloria Duque, an alcoholic Spaniard living in Mexico, witnesses a shootout between mobsters and police while working as a prostitute. Before dying, one of the police officers gives her a briefcase containing the addresses of the gang’s money-laundering operations around the world. Gloria is deported to Spain and returns to the home she shares with her husband, a former bullfighter who is now in a coma, and her mother-in-law, a resilient woman who is very fond of her daughter-in-law and gives lessons to pay the mortgage. Gloria finds a furrier’s shop in the briefcase that is being used to launder money and decides to rob it by cutting through the floor from the apartment above. But it takes longer than expected, and the owners return before Gloria can get the money, leaving her just enough time to escape. Meanwhile, one of the mobsters, Eduardo, is ordered to go to Madrid to find and kill Gloria, but he has doubts because he believes his daughter’s illness is divine punishment for his life as a murderer. Gloria tries unsuccessfully to find work, so she decides to rob the furrier’s shop. However, when she comes out, she encounters Eduardo, who takes her to the mobsters’ apartment. Eduardo tries to persuade his partner to let her live, but the partner ends up killing Eduardo. The mobster tortures Gloria, beating her and injuring her knee with a corkscrew, but she manages to kill him by stabbing him in the neck with a ballpoint pen. Gloria’s mother-in-law asks a wealthy friend for money to finish paying off the mortgage, then commits suicide by turning on the gas, killing her son as well. She leaves a note asking Gloria to get her school-leaving certificate and to be as happy as she can.
